Blankets & Sheets
Greenhawk Vancouver Island carries a wide selection of types and styles of blankets, sheets and coolers. There are many different theories about which type of blanket should be used under what circumstances and in what weather conditions.
The best rule to follow when selecting a blanket for your horse is to know what type of conditions your horse is kept in (i.e. stabled at night, out in a field 24 hours a day, etc.) and how hard your horse tends to be on their blankets. Even if your horse isn’t rough on their blankets, if they’re stabled beside a horse who likes to bite and play, this should also be taken into consideration when choosing an appropriate blanket.
NO BLANKET CAN BE MADE 100% HORSE PROOF
You will often hear the term denier when looking at different types of blankets. Denier refers to the yarn count, or the tightness of the weave of the blanket. Therefore, the higher the denier number, the higher the thread weave, thus, the stronger the blanket. For example, a 600 denier blanket is not going to be as tough as a 1200 denier.
In general, we feel that lighter weight sheets, coolers and stable blankets are best suited for indoor, attended use or as a second layer underneath a turnout blanket. As a general rule, if the blanket does not have back leg straps, the horse should not be left alone in it.
The turnout blankets will have a higher denier number and a waterproof coating. These blankets are ideal for outdoor turnout and depending on the weight of the blanket’s polyfill (measured in grams) they will have added warmth for the cooler weather seasons.

Wear and Tear Expectations
Given the nature and size of a horse, and their respective environments, blankets and sheets are not guaranteed against ripping or tearing. Buckles and straps may break under certain stress situations, which is actually what you want the blanket to do in the event of such a circumstance. Most tears or breaks are easily repaired. See below for blanket repair options.
Waterproof and Breathable Dupont Teflon Coating
We utilize the newest and most advanced technologies in our waterproof and breathable blankets. Dupont Teflon Coating on the outside maximizes stain and water repellency and assists in wind resistance. A hydrophobic (waterproof and breathable) membrane bonded to the inside of the outer shell ensures maximum waterproofing and breathability. There are many levels of waterproof and breathable membranes used in the industry and we use the highest quality membrane available. This unique process allows water vapour (perspiration) to pass through the blanket while simultaneously repelling rain and external water.
We suggest periodically inspecting your blanket and making repairs where necessary. "Scotchguard" water repellant spray is available at our store to waterproof your repairs. To ensure effective breathability do not over blanket or overheat your horse. Excessive perspiration may not breathe off.
Although the outer shell material is waterproof, no blanket can be made 100% waterproof, despite the manufacturer's claims. Although all major stitching seams are professionally taped on the inside for waterproofing, there are some areas of stitching that cannot be taped (the outer binding, areas of reinforcement on the lower surcingles and front straps, and the gusset binding). We have ensured these areas are all on the lower part of the blanket to help reduce this concern. Horses left outside in the severe weather conditions may experience wetness inside their blankets due to heavy rain or snow blowing in from the front or rear openings. As well, horses prone to rolling or rough play are also good candidates for this problem. It’s also not a bad idea to re-waterproof your blanket every couple years to ensure its longevity as a waterproof blanket. Note: These characteristics apply only to waterproof and breathable blankets.
Your blanket has been designed with 25 years of research to maximize waterproofing and breathability and to improve durability.
Washing Instructions
For best results hand wash your blanket and hang to dry. If washed in a machine, use luke warm water or cold water, and the gentlest washing cycle available. Avoid excessive washer or dryer heat. Always remove your leg straps before washing and ensure that any loose straps or surcingles on the blanket do not become caught in the washer or dryer.
For waterproof and breathable blankets, please note: Heat, dry cleaning, strong detergents or bleach may reduce or damage your blanket's waterproofing features.
Warranty and Guarantee
As with any product purchased at Greenhawk your blanket or sheet is fully guaranteed against manufacturer's defects in workmanship. It is also fully refundable as long as it is unused and clean. Always try your blanket or sheet on first using another sheet underneath. Please note your blanket is not guaranteed against ripping or normal wear and tear. Blankets returned to Greenhawk must be returned clean with the original receipt. Dirty blankets will be returned to their owners.
