Glynis Schultz - Manager/Owner

Glynis Schultz

I began riding at age four on a very naughty pony on Pender Island. Despite her antics, I fell in love with her and horses have been a life-long passion ever since. I was so excited when we moved to the Saanich Peninsula when I was eight and I was able to join Pony Club, start riding lessons, and compete in shows. When I was ten I got my first taste of Eventing. What could be more fun than cantering through a field and jumping logs, ditches and splashing through water? I was hooked! Eventing has since been the main focus of my competitive goals.
I owe horses a great deal in life. They have given me partnership, friendship, goals, life-long friends with a shared passion, and incredible travel and work opportunities in other countries. And of course horses were the obvious instigator in starting Greenhawk Vancouver Island which has been an amazing opportunity to be a part of the Vancouver Island equestrian community, work with a fabulous team of people and share a great passion with all of our customers and friends who also love horses.

I lived in the Yukon for close to 30 years before I moved to Victoria. I did a lot of backcountry riding
If I ever moved to the south I wanted to become a schooled rider, so I began lessons at the age of 45 with all the teenagers, I had to check my ego at the gate. When I moved to Victoria I started to take more lessons, began to show and bought my first horse. I showed in the hunter/jumper ring with After Dark and Defining Moment, my two horses.
Recently I fell in love with driving and discovered Miniature Horses. I have a miniature named Jack Sparrow and a Shetland/mini cross named Katie. I’ve been a member of the BC Carriage Driving society and I compete in Combined driving with Katie and Jack works as a fashion model, making his debut in the Greenhawk catalogue.
When Glynis and I first talked about opening a Greenhawk franchise we thought it was a really new and exciting idea and saw it as a way to help serve the equestrian community we love and care deeply about.

I’ve been a horse fanatic since the age of three. My parents still don’t understand where this passion came from and seriously think their baby may have been switched at the hospital. I grew up in North Vancouver where access to horses was limited, but I begged relentlessly for riding lessons and by the time I was a teenager, I had a lease on a horse and spent nearly every day at the barn.
After high school, I moved to Victoria to begin my studies at the University of Victoria in Creative Writing. Five years later and I’m still working on my degree after taking time off to travel and ride in Southeast Asia and India.
I joined the Greenhawk team in 2008 and I consider myself extremely lucky to have a job I love in a “horsey” environment and to work with such amazing people. I ride dressage and jump with my horse, Zappa, and my dog, Karma, is usually by my side at the store.
I also am very passionate about photography and my favourite subjects (surprise, surprise) are animals. I recently started my own photography business, Nunn Other Photography, and I sell my photo art cards at Greenhawk and am available to do private photo shoots.

I retired from a career as a Registered Nurse (Emergency, Intensive Care and Drug/ Alcohol Rehabilitation) in 1991. I have been married for over 40 years to Russ, a career naval officer and have 2 adult children and 1 grandchild. I am the daughter of a Victoria pioneer family and horses have been a part of my life for over 55 years. I currently own and keep 2 horses at home – Easy, a retired Dutch/TB cross and Johnny, a Canadian whom I have trained and shown successfully. Russ and I also share our home with 2 Manx cats, Charlie and Kipper, and a Brittney, Divot. I am very active in the Victoria dressage community and enjoy organizing the shows for the Lower Island Equestrian Club. As well as my horses I enjoy my family, gardening, Scrabble and my amazing job. I also love to travel and have been very fortunate in this regard – we have lived in Ontario, Nova Scotia, London England and Norfolk Virginia and have taken advantage of 18 career moves to explore North America, Europe, Japan and the Caribbean.
I am very proud to say that I am one of the lucky employees who have been on staff at Greenhawk Vancouver Island since the store opened in 2006 and I continue to learn every day from my customers and my co-workers.

I was born into a horsey family so the love of horses was instant and unchallenged. I honestly don’t remember my first pony ride. I was very fortunate to always have a pony or horse by my side. I took half a year break in Grade 11 to work for a hunter/jumper stable in Delmar, California.
After graduating from high school I broadened my equine world by moving to Vancouver to ride and work for a large hunter/jumper stable in Langley. Once back in Victoria I decided to make horses my profession by taking an Equine Massage Therapy course in Virginia. I then started my business, Cyprus Equine Massage.
After “growing up”, getting married and having a super adorable 2 ˝ year old boy, my showing time table has slowed down. I’m now learning some dressage and was fortunate enough to be offered Glynis Schultz’s super horse, Ngapuhi. He falls very easily into my heart with all the other horses I’ve had as they were all such special souls.
I joined the Greenhawk team when we first opened. I love my job and all the wonderful people I work with and meet.

I was born in Germany, came to Canada at 13 and did the rest of my growing up in Smithers, BC. Went to UBC, travelled, got married taught school a few years and then moved to Pender Island where we bought the General Store and ran the post office, and where our two girls, Glynis and Lara, were born. At 5 Glynis fell in love with her first pony, Lara a couple of years later. That launched our horsey life. We left the small island, moved to the big island, bought a farm in Central Saanich with horses (of course), sheep, chickens, dogs and cats - the whole catastrophy. And I became a horse dad, the kind who doesn't ride (except for the very occasional trail ride when there happened to be an extra horse available) but does all that other stuff, lots of chores, haying, fences, trailering, going to shows and events, looking after the chickens and sheep and trying to make enough money to pay for it all. And I loved it. In 2005, just about the time I retired, Glynis saw an opportunity to open the Greenhawk Vancouver Island store and I came along for the ride. And so far it's been a great ride.

I was lucky to be born into the horsey world. My mother was putting me up on her horses before I could walk. As I child I spent every day at the barn and many years later I am still there everyday. I began competing at the age of ten and continued in the hunter jumpers since then. I have been privileged to ride many great horses; they have all taught me their own way, some a little more assertive than others.
Living for a bit in New Zealand when I was twelve, it was horses and riding that helped me forget my homesickness. I went to live in Wales after graduation and I was able to stay and work at an eventing stable. I learned so much and had the time of my life. The riding culture there is so amazing, and it gave me a completely different perspective of what riding means. Riding along the beaches of Wales was an unforgettable experience.
I was given a great opportunity and had a job grooming during my high school summers. I not only got to work for some of the greats, including Frank Selinger and Kyle King, but I was able to learn from them along the way. The money earned from grooming bought me my first horse. I bought Chase as a three year old, and now five years later we are cruising (sometimes a bit too fast) around the jumper ring. I started at Greenhawk about two years ago and feel very lucky to have a job talking about what I love all day.

I was born in North Vancouver, into an extended family with no other riders. When I was a baby, my mom walked a lot with me, often passing a couple of horses down the street . They caught my eye, and that is where it all started! When I was 7, I attended a one week summer camp. There was no turning back. Then came once a week lessons, then a lease, then another.... When I was twelve, we moved to Victoria and I convinced my mom (begged, then wrote a business plan) to buy me my first horse, a 16.3hh thoroughbred named Macchiato. We competed in the Appy shows at Beaver Lake, my first real non-schooling shows! A year later, we sold Auto and bought Cadet, a 2-year -old 15.2hh Holsteiner. We learned a lot together, and worked our way up to the SSITS series. After a year of jumper competition, Cadet told me he would rather do dressage, so he moved to Tsawassen, where he now excels at First Levelas a 5-year-old. Then came 16.2hh Rylie, my phenomenal jumper from deWinton, AB. Ry could jump the moon...when he wanted too. He quickly convinced me to return him to his dressage roots, and he moved to upstate NY to teach Level 3 dressage to his new owner. I am now leasing the beautiful 17.2hh Salvatore (owned by Liz Ashton), who took me to 1.0m and 1.1m at Spruce Meadows last summer. We plan to compete at Thermal this winter, hopefully advancing to 1.15m. The Greenhawk team has helped me through all the horse-size changes. I am really happy now to work at Greenhawk, helping other riders care for and equip themselves and their horses!

I have been interested in horses since a very young age. I was born in Toronto, Ontario and moved to Vancouver Island when I was in grade 1. My mom was a horseback rider when she was younger and thought it would be a great idea to get me involved in horses too (I bet she regrets that now!) She had no idea what she was starting. I started out riding school horses and eventually moved to leasing. By the time I was 16 I convinced my parents to buy me my own horse, Prince, a 13 yr old Thoroughbred. I rode him in the jumpers for about 6 years. He currently lives out in Sooke with a new owner. I now ride at Lochside Lane with Tanya Hardy and compete in hunter’s mainly, I feel extremely lucky to have the opportunity to ride and compete on some fantastic horses. I have worked at Greenhawk since day one! I love being able to work somewhere related to horses and Glynis and Maureen are fabulous people to work for.

It all started when one of my old babysitters had a pony, which my sister and I were lucky enough to get lead around on. Once we had a taste of the horse craze, we convinced our parent's to enter us in a riding summer camp at the “old” Westside Stables. And that was it, we were hooked!! When I was eight years old, I shared my first horse (“Shu” a Quarter Horse) with my sister. I went with the Hunter/Jumper routine, getting a solid position and a feel for the stride length, before moving to the fast and the furious in the Jumper ring. After outgrowing my first horse, in height and capability I got my second horse, “Beau” an experienced 4'6” Jumper. I became very competitive at the 3'6”-3'9” Jumpers. Being in my teenage years, where I wasn't afraid of anything, galloping on roads/trails, jumping 4'0” and even willing to try Eventing, my sister's new thrill. Finding my new adrenaline rush and passion, Eventing is the discipline that I compete in today with my sixth horse “Astro”, a Thoroughbred.
I am one of the originals from the Greenhawk team. I would say it’s the funniest, but most expensive place to work... due to my guilty pleasure of shopping for horse equipment. My other devotions are my dog, “Jasper” an SPCA border collie mix and finishing the Registered Massage Therapy Program at the West Coast College of Massage. With my graduation in sight, you will see more of Jasper and I in the store.

Every Christmas I asked for a pony--I never got one under the tree. I did, however, get riding lessons for my 5th birthday and it was all financially downhill from there. I joined Pony Club and met Glynis who was my first stable management teacher--I blame her for helping me develop a life long habit! I bought an ex racehorse when I was 16 who is now happily retired on my parents’ farm with his welsh pony Cressa and his budddies Dino and Zappa (Cassidy's horse!). Currently I event with my 7 year old Shire/Arab (aka the Sharab), who does his job with endless enthusiasm! Glynis and I travel together to exotic places like Chase, BC, Ranier, Washington and Kalispel, Montana with our horses in tow to spend all our time and money following ridiculous patterns and jumping over terrifying obstacles. Sometimes we discuss all the fabulous things we could do if we didn't have horses to pay for, but I recently decided that I like horses better than money, and Hawaiian vacations are over-rated (probably, I can't afford to go and find out on my own).

My mum said I must have horses in my blood, since no one in my family rides, and I had loved horses since an early age. Apparently, as a child, I used to come home from school with drawings of horse hooves in my backpack. Why horse hooves? I don’t know. But she’s kept them to this day. I began riding (finally) when I was 10 years-old at a Briar Patch summer riding camp. Instantly hooked, I began weekly riding lessons that Fall at Bear Hill Riding School. I’ve continued to ride since then and am now training my horse, Raz, for the Hunter ring. Unfortuantely, Raz suffered a stifle OCD injury a year ago so I’ve been working hard to rehab him to jump again. Hopefully we’ll be in the show ring next summer. I’ve started my Nursing degree at Camosun College with the hopes to work all over the world as a nurse (to fund my riding dreams of course!) I recently joined the team at Greenhawk (my dream job!) and although I’ve been a horse person for many years, I enjoy how I’m constantly learning new things about horses while on the job. It’s so great to work with a staff where everyone gets along and helps each other as well the customers.

Oliver - Original Store Dog

Oliver

Oliver was the original store dog. He always waited patiently in line for his biscuit and was an excellent store greeter. He had a loyal customer fan base who often dropped by just to give him a pat. He is missed by everyone.

Karma - Current store dog

Karma

Karma is our resident store dog. She loves to come to work and is especially helpful when trying on boots--she will lie on your feet to keep them warm! She'll do just about anything for a treat and her favourite trick is to give high fives.

Ruckle - Store Dog

Ruckle

Ruckle is the newest addition to Greenhawk Vancouver Island and he came to us all the way from Taiwan! He's a very friendly guy and loves nothing more than a good pat from customers.
